My history
Hi, my name is David, and I'm fundraising for the kids in my Colombian hometown of Lorica. The Colombian government has abandoned our town, and the corruption has always left the people of Lorica to live in poverty.
Seven years ago, I came to this country with a small carry-on bag filled with big dreams and hope. The circumstances that brought me here to this fantastic country are known only to the people I love most, but it was the best decision of my life.
I was born and raised in Lorica, a little town in northern Colombia, with fewer than 500 people. My grandma was the most important person in my life; I'm so grateful to have had her. I learned so much from her; I'm the person I am because of her. I was supposed to finish high school and then do whatever destiny wanted from me, with no money, but she saw something special in me and did as much as she could to give me an excellent education. It wasn't easy, but she did it. Sometimes I ask myself how she did it – someone with no education, with many responsibilities that she didn't have to take on while raising two grandchildren as her own. She was so caring; she always had food on the table for strangers. I remember her giving up her own food to others who were hungry. As a child, it always made me angry when she did that, but I didn't understand the reason… and she didn't need to give me one; that's how she was.
Since I came here, my family and I have started a little charity with our own money. Every year, my mom gathers all the children of our Lorica community and gives them a little joy on Halloween and Christmas.
Last year, we raised $2,000, that we used to give 120 presents on Christmas's Eve to these children and basket of food to 50 families.
